What Are The Bhutan Travel Policies After Reporting The First Cases Of Omicron Coronavirus Variants?

Contents

Bhutan has made international headlines for the successful management of

the Covid-19 pandemic with many countries and leaders praising for every

success led by His Majesty the King following.

Following an evidence-based approach to testing, Bhutan has always

adopted and followed the strictest and highest standards of Covid-19

measures throughout the pandemic.

The country has recorded only 21 coronavirus-related deaths since the

pandemic began. It managed to keep the numbers low by putting in place

every measure necessary to safeguard the people in the country from the

pandemic. However, with the emergence of the less dangerous omicron

variant in the country in March 2022, the government decided to gradually

lift travel restrictions and other measures to live with the virus.

Given that tourism is one of the main economic drivers and economic

recovery is the central forward-looking agenda of the country, tourism

remains one of the most important sectors for the country. On this front, it

is critical for the country to consider possible elements of a post-pandemic

travel policy and maintain appropriate safety protocols so that there are no

risks in reopening the facilities.

While travel policies might change at any time with the immediate effect

depending on the pandemic situation and as a result of new risks related to

Covid-19, there are post-covid travel policies and restrictions imposed by the

government in the country. Health experts in the country will monitor the

continuously changing nature of the virus and the evolution of SARS-CoV-2

variants of concern and consider restructuring travel policies to protect

travelers and reduce the risk in the country.

All individuals wishing to travel to Bhutan are required to show proof of

being fully vaccinated against Covid-19 before they travel to Bhutan from a

foreign country. Travelers should produce a Covid-19 negative certificate on

arrival in the country. The test should be carried out by Reverse

transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) from a certified laboratory

not earlier than 72 hours (3 days) before embarking or the initiation of the

journey from the country of origin.

The other travel requirements remain as before whereby the travelers

should complete travel formalities before embarking on the travel. Travelers

who need to travel to Bhutan can contact their travel agencies for ticketing

and all related information.

The tour guides must brief upon arrival of the tourists about the preventive

measures implemented including the mandatory use of facemask for the

good and safety of others.
